Video Journal #2

Kermit got a little ahead of himself this week. I'm going to kill that frog!

Week 4 Assignment

This is the week 4 assignment for AnimationMentor. The two balls have different weights. On the left is a bowling ball, and on the right is a ping-pong ball.

Week 3 Assignments

I've finished week 3 of AnimationMentor, and time is really flying now! Above is the bouncing ball sequence that I completed as this week's animation assignment. Below is a pose that I made representing "excitement," another part of this week's assigned work.

Animation Mentor - Off and Running!

This blog has been pretty quiet for a while now, but things are picking up. Three weeks ago, I began classes with the online animation school AnimationMentor. This is a great program, and I'm really excited about how much I'm going to learn.

I can't give away too much about the program (trade secrets!), but I will be showing off some of my coursework in this blog. Hopefully, some of you will like what you see and decide to enroll.

Keep in mind that this is only my third week, so you should see a lot of improvement as I continue my studies.

Below is my first real assignment. I had to pose a 3D character to match a pose I'd sketched from real life.
The hips are a little funky, but otherwise I'm pretty proud of it.

Heckling Hare: Second Attempt

This post is one of my "assignments" from John K.'s "$100,000 Animation Drawing Course". If you want to participate in this series of free lessons, go check out the introduction to the course at the Animation Archive blog.

Here is my second attempt at drawing the infamous frame from "Heckling Hare," laid out in John K.'s Blog. This time, I could tell before I finished inking it that I was off on some key details.
Most noticeable of the problems was the length and angle of the neck -- a frustrating development since I thought I'd measured my proportions carefully. The right (my right, Bugs's left) side of his face is also much too scrunched, so I didn't have room to draw the details properly. Overall, his head is too narrow. Check the comparison below to see where I went wrong.

Still, I think this attempt is better than the last one. I was able to line up more than one feature when I did the overlay in Photoshop. Next time, I'll do my construction in a scannable color (instead of non-photo blue) so I can show my drawing process.

Heckling Hare Attempt #1

This post is one of my "assignments" from John K.'s "$100,000 Animation Drawing Course". If you want to participate in this series of free lessons, go check out the introduction to the course at the Animation Archive blog.

A few weeks ago, John K. posted a lesson in this blog entry on how to draw bugs bunny using solid construction. Below is my attempt:

At first glance, I thought it looked pretty good, but as you can see from the comparison below, it's really quite off. Parts of it actually make me wonder what I was thinking -- his shoulder, for example, looks nothing like the original, even when you look at it without the overlay. I didn't expect the whiskers to look right because I just threw them in without much thought. I'll be giving this another shot in the not-too-distant future.
